Turmeric

Turmeric has been used in India for over 2500 years. It has many powerful health benefits. The active ingredient of turmeric is called curcumin. Turmeric has strong anti-inflammatory properties and may be of benefit in a wide variety of different health conditions. This spice is thought to have anti-cancer properties. It is also a great liver detoxifier as well as protecting the liver from the harmful effects of toxins. Evidence suggests that it may prevent and slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease. It has been used in some cultures as a treatment for depression due to its inhibition of monoamine oxidase in the brain. Of interest to many is that it can assist in fat metabolism and weight management. Because of it's anti-inflammatory properties it can be helpful in the treatment of arthritis and has been shown to reduce joint pain. Turmeric is also very rich in anti-oxidants which may have anti-aging and heart protective effects. It may also protect the heart because of it's anti-platelet activity (which reduces the risk of blood clotting) as well as by reducing cholesterol levels. It is an excellent digestive aid and can help with the digestion of fats by stimulating bile flow. It can also help with digestion by helping with the elimination of parasites.

You can simply add the turmeric spice to the foods you naturally eat; but for more potent benefits, I like to supplement with turmeric extract capsules that can be bought in most health foods stores. Most good extracts will have a 95% curcumin content which again is the active ingredient of turmeric. I take 300 mg twice a day and feel great. It is not recommended that people with gallstones or bile obstruction use turmeric. Caution should also be used if you already on a blood thinning medication. As always, consult with you doctor if you have any concerns.
