Having a moderate of dark (not milk) chocolate seems to have a surprising # of health benefits. First dark chocolate is a potent anti-oxidant. The flavonoid-rich cocoa powder has been shown to lower blood pressure and increase HDL (good) cholesterol as well as increase blood flow and reduce blood clotting which may prevent plaque formation in the arteries. Cocoa also contains a compund called PEA which may improve mood, promote mental alertness, improve the ability to concentrate and increase pleasure. Dark chocolate even increases one's sensitivity to insulin. Did you know that raw cocoa has the highest antioxidant value of all natural foods? It also appears to have anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties and is a good source of the minerals magnesium, sulphur, calcium, iron, zinc, copper, potassium, and manganese; plus some of the B Vitamins. Last, You maybe surprised to learn that dark chocolate can help you lose weight because it has appetite-suppressant properties. Don't go overboard on the chocolate however. Again moderation is the key. I will have 1-2 ounces of chocolate per 3-4 times per week as a healthy treat. Try to get a product with at least a 70% cocoa content; the higher the better. I consume dark chocolate with a cocoa level of 95%.
