Low testosterone (or hypogonadism) in older men may not only worsen a preexisting depression, but may in some be the cause of it. With age, it is not uncommon to see a decline in testosterone levels. Low levels of this male hormone may cause many of the same symptoms that are seen in clinical depression such as fatigue, irritability, diminished libido, concentration difficulties, insomnia and lack of motivation.

It is estimated that men with low T are four times more likely to be diagnosed with depression. Further, uncorrected hypogonadism may result in only partial benefit from anti-depressant therapy. It is believed that low testosterone can effect serotonin and norepinephrine levels in the brain. Serotonin and norepinephrine are brain neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood. Many of the anti-depressants on the market today work by increasing the amount of serotonin and / or norepinephrine in the brain.

Many psychiatrists and primary health physicians rarely order testosterone levels. However, it seems to increasingly make sense to routinely check the level of this important hormone in men over forty in light of the increased awareness of the impact of low T on both physical and mental health especially if there is a complaint of decreased sex drive and / or erectile difficulties.

One of the challenges patients encounter is that even if the doctor does check their total and free testosterone levels, they often will not treat the patient with hormone replacement therapy (HRT) if the patient’s levels are within the “normal range.” Many physicians do not take into account that for many men being in the low end of the normal range may represent of drop in the amount of free hormone available to them and may not be the optimal part of the range for them to experience optimal health.

To be clear- not all older males with depression have low T, and not all men with low T have have depression; but it make sense to be mindful about the connection between the two conditions.

Coffee- breakfast of champions

More & more it seems to appear that drinking coffee is good for you. The coffee bean is actually a fruit and contains over 1,000 compounds which scientists are just beginning to understand. Coffee is abundant in anti-oxidants. For good or bad, it is the greatest source of antioxidants in the average American's diet.

Here are some of coffees benefits:

-lowers risk of diabetes by decreasing blood glucose levels and increasing insulin sensitivity

-increases metabolic rate and reduces adipose accumulation

-reduces risk of of breast, prostate, colorectal & liver cancer

-decreases inflammation

-improves HDL (good cholesterol) levels

-reduces risk of Alzheimer's and dementia

-improves cognitive function

-decreases DNA damage

-increases immune function (coffee drinkers generally get less colds than non-coffee drinkers)

-prevents constipation

-increases energy and exercise performance

Possible concerns with caffeine consumption (especially in excess) could be an increase in anxiety levels, insomnia, irritability, caffeine withdrawal headaches and frequent trips to the bathroom due to caffeine's diuretic effect. It may also pull B vitamins out of the body, so I think all coffee drinkers should supplement diet with B complex. Some holistic health providers warn of stress placed on adrenal glands from caffeine use, but I think the concerns are overstated.

It is a powerful anti-oxidant found mainly in red wine, grapes, blueberries, pomegranates and to a lesser extent in peanuts. Resveratrol may aid in weight loss by stimulating a gene that is responsible for decreasing fat stores. Stimulation of this same gene is thought to slow the aging process. It also has anti-cancer properties and is a great energy booster which can increase stamina & endurance in athletes. It is thought to decrease the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease due to its protective effect on brain neurons. It may help lower blood sugar and enhance immunity. It benefits the cardiovascular system by increasing good cholesterol, protecting against arterial damage and preventing blood clotting thus countering some of the bad effects of a high fat diet which may explain the so-called "French Paradox." For all these reasons and then some, supplementing with resveratrol may be something you want to consider. It can give you the benefits of drinking many bottles of red wine without the added calories.

Cranberry Extract

I recently got turned onto cranberry extract. I was impressed with all of the reported health benefits from this product. First, it is very rich in anti-oxidant content and is a great source of vitamin C. Cranberries have long been touted as a way to prevent and combat urinary tract infections. The high proanthocyanidin content helps stop bacteria from making its way into the body through the urinary tract. Cranberry extract has been shown to reduce cancerous tumor growth and may assist with recovery after a stroke. It is also said to reduce the risk of colon cancer and improve cardiovascular health by decreasing LDL (bad) cholesterol and increasing HDL (good) cholesterol. The tannins in cranberries can protect the body against atherosclerosis. The high flavonoid content decreases chance of tooth decay and helps fight cavities by preventing bacteria from latching onto the teeth's enamel. The quinic acid in this fruit may prevent the formation of kidney stones. Last, it helps with bodily detoxification which can then aid in improving immune function.

Maca

There are many reported benefits from a Persian herb called Maca. It is considered to be an adaptogenic herb which means it helps you better deal with physical and emotional stress. The following claims have been made about Maca: increases energy, stamina & endurance, balances male & female hormone levels, benefits the circulatory system, nourishes the glands, calms the nerves, aids digestion, supports the adrenals, improves athletic performance & sexual functioning, increases libido, enhances emotional well-being, may reduce symptoms of depression & anxiety, promotes deeper sleep and enhances memory & brain function.

I have been using the herb for several months now and notice increased energy, improved exercise performance and enhanced workout recovery.

I find them to be a very invigorating way to start the day. I recently came across some data that suggested that cold showers increase testosterone levels in males, so I did some research to find other health benefits to cold showers.

Here are a list of some additional claimed benefits I came across:

Increases circulation

Flushes the organs of wastes

Strengthens the nervous system

Eliminates toxins

Improves immunity

Tightens the skin

Increases energy

Decreases depression

Enhances weight loss (presumably by burning calories to maintain your body temperature)

The cold shower is not for the faint of heart. It has been advised that people with heart conditions or high blood pressure do not engage in this type of therapy. As always if you decide to try it, check with your medical doctor to get the OK.

This important gland produces the hormones T3 and T4 which regulate the metabolism. Hypothyroidism is a condtion in which your thyroid is under-secreting these hormones which can result in fatigue, constipation, coarse skin, cold extemities, weight gain and trouble losing weight. Traditionally hypothrroidism is treated with hormone replacement, but there are a number of things you can do to improve thryoid function naturally. Probably the most important thing you can do is supplement with iodine and iodine rich food. Iodine is a trace element that is used by the thyroid to produce T3 and T4. You can buy iodine in a health food store. You can also increase your intake of iodine by adding kelp, sea vegetables and sea salt to your diet. Other helpful supplements include coconut oil (see previous blog post), the herb licorice, B complex and the amino acid L-tyrosine. Exercise can also jumpstart a sluggish thryoid and improve your metabolism. Yoga can also be a helpful adjunct here. A herbal and / or dietary detoxification program can help rejuvianate your entire endocrine system. In addtion to the above, it is worth noting that ceratin foods in excess can impair proper thryoid function and act as goitrogens; such foods include cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, soy products, sugar and caffeine.

Deplin

Over the last few years I have had great success augmenting antidepressants with the prescriptive medical food known as Deplin. Surprisingly many doctors are not aware of this product and even fewer are actually using it. As many already know, depression is thought to be associated with an imbalance of the brain neurotransmitters- serotonin, norepinephrine and/ or dopamine. The antidepressants used today typically work on one or more of these three neurotransmitter systems.

Unfortunately, some people only achieve a partial response to these anti-depressants and do not achieve complete remission. This can result in a poorer long term prognosis and an increased likelihood of future relapse. It is now thought that some of these partial responders may have low levels of L-methylfolate in the brain and may benefit from L-methylfolate supplementation.

L-methylfolate helps the brain to naturally produce more of the neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. Low brain methylfolate levels could be due to inadequate folic acid intake, certain chronic diseases (i.e. diabetes, hypothyroidism, cancer, Chron’s disease etc.), oral contraceptives and anti-seizure medication use, smoking, excess alcohol, pregnancy, anorexia and/ or poor nutrition. Interestingly, about 70% of those with depression may have a genetic factor that limits the body’s ability to convert folic acid from the diet to L-methylfolate in the brain. L-methylfolate is the only usable form of folic acid that can assist in the production of the neurotransmitters linked to depression.

To best increase the folate levels in the brain, one needs the active form of folate which again is L-methylfolate. Deplin which contains this active form of folate is able to cross the blood brain barrier to assist in the production of the neurotransmitters thought to be low in those suffering from depression. As a result, Deplin often helps your current antidepressant work better. My experience using Deplin with my patients has generally been very positive. I find it not only boosts the antidepressant response one is getting from their current medication, but also helps to increase energy levels as well.

Since Deplin is not a drug, but a medical food, it is extremely well- tolerated and side-effects are generally not an issue. Many patients may notice a beneficial response after only 1-2 weeks with the full effect taking up to several weeks. Even though Deplin is not a drug, it does require a prescription. Talk to your doctor to see if Deplin may be right for you

Inflammation & Weight Gain

There seems to be more and more evidence coming out that inflammation is a cause of weight gain; and conversely, weight gain increases the inflammation in the body. The thought is that inflammation in the body causes a resistance to the hormone leptin. Leptin acts on receptors in the hypothalamus to decrease your appetite; Lepitn also increases your metabolism by increasing energy expenditure. Leptin-resistance is thought to be a significant factor in obesity just like insulin resistance is a factor in diabetes. As I mentioned, inflammation seems to increase weight gain and weight gain seems to further increase bodily inflammation. There are a number of things that you can do to reduce inflammation and thus assist with weight loss as well as better overall health. First, eliminate or at least limit all junk food from your diet. Reduce sugar and "white" carbs such as white bread, white rice and pasta made of white flour. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Avoid margarine. Increase the intake of Omega 3 foods in your diet (see post on fish oil). Take a good anti-oxidant (see Juice Plus link), add an Omega 3 supplement, take CLA. Remember to drink your H2O and, of course, don't forget to exercise if medically able. Reduce stress where possible and get adequate sleep. There are a number of other supplements that can help reduce body inflammation such as the Indian spice Turmeric, the digestive enzyme Bromelain, the herb Boswellia and good old green tea. Adding ginger or ginger tea to your diet can also help reduce inflammation. As an aside, after only a few days of taking these supplements, my morning knee pain completely disappeared. Hope this information is helpful.

Coconut Oil

A friend of mine recently turned me on to Coconut Oil, so I wanted to share some of the potential benefits of this wonder food. Coconut Oil is a source of good and unique fats and contains a high content of medium chain triglycerides (MCTs). MCTs are known to have many beneficial effects, so don't let the fact that it is a fat scare you off. The word fat has gotten a bad rap and certainly we are learning more and more about the health benefits of certain fats.

Coconut Oil may help with weight loss by optimizing thyroid function and improving metabolism. It is also thought to improve digestion and assist in nutrient absorption and may help with irritable bowel symptoms. In addition, it improves immune function and helps the body fight against fungal, bacterial and viral infections. It also improves blood sugar regulation and insulin secretion and is very beneficial to the pancreas. As a result of its ability to improve nutrient absorption, it can help improve and preserve bone strength. Not only does Coconut Oil have excellent anti-oxidant properties, but it is very beneficial for heart health. The high lauric acid content in Coconut Oil may help to reduce the risk of arteriosclerosis, improve cholesterol levels and lower blood pressure. Generally, one teaspoon twice per day would be sufficient. Applied externally to the hair it acts as an excellent conditioner and can help with dry scalp and dandruff. Some even apply it to the skin to moisturize and beatify the skin and help with dry skin and wrinkles.

In fact, 61% of skeletal muscle is made up of this important amino acid. During intense workouts glutamine is depleted from your body which can negatively effect workout recovery. Supplementing with glutamine can therefore help with workout recovery. Glutamine plays an important role in improving protein synthesis and minimizing protein breakdown (anti-catabolic). Glutamine can also increase your body's human Growth Hormone (HGH) production which may further help with both new muscle growth and fat metabolism. Two grams of glutamine have been shown to increase HGH by over 400%. In addition to the above, glutamine also improves immune system functioning, brain functioning and intestinal health. Glutamine has also been shown to decrease sugar cravings which is helpful for those wishing to lose weight and stay on their diet. A serious fitness enthusiast may want to take up to 10 grams per day- 5 grams after workouts and another 5 grams at night. Taking a dose at night will optimize the HGH spurt that naturally occurs during sleep.

The father of medicine, Hippocrates, used it as a healing elixir and tonic. It contains an abundance of vitamins, minerals and enzymes. It also contains a fiber called pectin which helps reduce bad cholesterol. It contains calcium and also helps extract calcium from foods to help maintain strong bones. Its high potassium content has a number of health benefits including eliminating toxins from the body. ACV helps in the breakdown of fat which aids in weight loss, and it has been suggested that it helps to speed up metabolism. The malic acid in ACV can help fight infection and dissolve uric acid around the joints to help reduce symptoms of gout. It is said to help with constipation, headaches, yeast infections, high blood pressure, acne, allergies, fatigue, digestion and arthritis. Some apply it directly to the scalp to help with dandruff and give the hair a great shine. To help with bad breath or a sore throat, many ACV enthusiasts gargle with ACV diluted with water. For a great detox bath, one can throw a bottle of ACV in a bath mixed with a box of baking soda and a carton of epsom salt of dead sea salts.

I use ACV that is made from organically grown apples and is free of pesticides and preservatives. I take a tablespoon of ACV diluted with several ounces of water and drink it twice a day before lunch and dinner to help with digestion. You can add a bit of honey to help with taste if needed. ACV can also be used as a salad dressing. My salad dressing consists of ACV and olive oil.

No wonder ACV has been considered to be a wonder food.

Think of your subconscious as the 90% of the iceberg below the water and your conscious mind as the 10% above. If your conscious mind decides on a course of action (i.e. weight loss), but your much more powerful and influential subconscious mind has beliefs which would be at odds with the goal of weight loss (i.e. you have to clean your plate because people in third world countries are starving, eating cookies helps you to feel loved because your grandma use to give you cookies as a kid, being overweight keeps you safe etc.) your subconscious will sabotage your well-intentioned efforts. However, if you can align your conscious intent with your subconscious beliefs and programming, then you will much more easily obtain any goal you set your mind to. That is why I so highly recommend MindMaster as a tool to literally reprogram your subconscious. I have had some great personal results with MindMaster which is a great use of technology to help you reach your goals in all areas of your life. The great thing about this product is that you are in complete control of the beliefs/ affirmations that you choose to install in your subconscious. It has many powerful health benefits. The active ingredient of turmeric is called curcumin. Turmeric has strong anti-inflammatory properties and may be of benefit in a wide variety of different health conditions. This spice is thought to have anti-cancer properties. It is also a great liver detoxifier as well as protecting the liver from the harmful effects of toxins. Evidence suggests that it may prevent and slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease. It has been used in some cultures as a treatment for depression due to its inhibition of monoamine oxidase in the brain. Of interest to many is that it can assist in fat metabolism and weight management. Because of it's anti-inflammatory properties it can be helpful in the treatment of arthritis and has been shown to reduce joint pain. Turmeric is also very rich in anti-oxidants which may have anti-aging and heart protective effects. It may also protect the heart because of it's anti-platelet activity (which reduces the risk of blood clotting) as well as by reducing cholesterol levels. It is an excellent digestive aid and can help with the digestion of fats by stimulating bile flow. It can also help with digestion by helping with the elimination of parasites.

You can simply add the turmeric spice to the foods you naturally eat; but for more potent benefits, I like to supplement with turmeric extract capsules that can be bought in most health foods stores. Most good extracts will have a 95% curcumin content which again is the active ingredient of turmeric. I take 300 mg twice a day and feel great. It is not recommended that people with gallstones or bile obstruction use turmeric. Caution should also be used if you already on a blood thinning medication. First dark chocolate is a potent anti-oxidant. The flavonoid-rich cocoa powder has been shown to lower blood pressure and increase HDL (good) cholesterol as well as increase blood flow and reduce blood clotting which may prevent plaque formation in the arteries. Cocoa also contains a compund called PEA which may improve mood, promote mental alertness, improve the ability to concentrate and increase pleasure. Dark chocolate even increases one's sensitivity to insulin. Did you know that raw cocoa has the highest antioxidant value of all natural foods? It also appears to have anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties and is a good source of the minerals magnesium, sulphur, calcium, iron, zinc, copper, potassium, and manganese; plus some of the B Vitamins. Last, You maybe surprised to learn that dark chocolate can help you lose weight because it has appetite-suppressant properties. Don't go overboard on the chocolate however. I consume dark chocolate with a cocoa level of 95%.

Get Healthy with Ginger

The benefits of ginger and ginger tea are impressive. I love to have ginger tea with my evening meal. Ginger stimulates digestion by causing more digestive enzymes to be produced. It can relieve nausea, heartburn, motion sickness, bloating and menstrual cramps. It has anti-inflammatory effects (via prostaglandin modulation) which can lessen arthritits pain and provide headache relief. It is great in helping to ease the symptoms of the common cold as it can help reduce fever and act as a decongestant. It may also serve as a mood enhancer and stress reliever. Ginger is thought to reduce LDL cholesterol and slow or prevent cancer growth. Last, it is a great breath freshener and thought by Indian culture to be a good detoxifier. For all these reasons, give ginger a try.

Beat the Winter Blues

Seasonal Affective Disorer (SAD), also known as the winter blahs or winter blues, is a not uncommon conditon (incidence varies with the geographic location one lives) in which a person notes changes in moods with changes in season. The most common manifestation is the emergence of recurrent depressive episodes beginning in the fall and worsening in the winter as a result of the decrease in photo-stimulation by the sun which is then thought to effect serotonin, melatonin and Vitamin D levels in the body. Not only are the days shorter, but the sun is farther away from the planet so light intensity is decreased. Also, one be outside less as a result of the colder weather. Common symptoms of SAD include lowered energy, increased need for sleep and increased appetite with carbohydrate cravings. In more severe cases, anti-depressant medication may be recommeded. Other therapy recommendations would include light therapy in which one would sit in front of a light box with a light intensity of at least 10,000 Lux for 20-45 minutes per day, getting out as much as possible, having a well light work and home environment, exercise and Vitamin D supplementaion. One could also go on a vacation to a geographic area closer to the equator i.e. Hawaii.

Digestive Enzymes- you are what you digest

Food that is not properly digested can rot and putrefy in the gut resulting in a buildup of waste in the intestinal tract which produces bacteria and toxins that can then be absorbed into the rest of the body effecting health and energy levels. Poor digestion can result in constipation, weight gain, acid reflux, parasites, flatulence, inflammation, fatigue, allergies, bad breath and impaired immune response. The more raw fruits and vegetables that you eat, the more digestive enzymes you get; and the more digestive enzymes you get, the better you digest the food you eat which means more nutrients available for better health. If you suffer from any of the above mentioned conditions, you may want to increase your intake of raw fruits and vegetable as well as supplementing your diet with digestive enzyme tablets that can be taken with meals. Digestive enzymes can help your body breakdown layers of old undigested food remaining in the gastrointestinal tract which may help with weight loss.

Strengthen Your Immune System with Probiotics

Probiotics ("good/ friendly" bacteria) are important to maintain good intestinal health. A Mediterranean diet encourages the use of fresh fruits and vegetables, olive oil, fish and nuts and minimizes the intake of sugar and red meat. This type of diet is thought to be beneficial because of the high amounts of Omega 3 fatty acids and phytonutrient antioxidants both of which support brain function and structure. Some helpful nutritional supplements to further support brain health would be 1) Phosphatidylserine which helps to sharpen memory, decrease cognitive decline and improve mood 2) DHA whose concentration in the brain declines with age and whose use can also reverse cognitive decline and 3) Ginkgo Biloba which promotes healthy blood flow to the brain and increases oxygen delivery to the brain as well as serving as an antioxidant. Ginkgo also increases the availability of the important brain neurotransmitter acetylcholine and has been shown to improve memory and sharpen focus. Of course don't forget heathy exercise (which increases blood flow to the brain and promotes the production of feel good neurotransmitters) and stress reduction (which decreases the harmful effects of the stress hormone cortisol). Last, good sleep is a must if you want your brain to fire on all it's cylinders.

Calcium deficiency is the most common nutrient deficiency; it is estimate that only 21% of people are getting adequate amounts of calcium in their diets. Of course just about everyone knows that calcium is important for the development of strong bones and teeth, but it does a lot of other great things as well. Calcium can reduce your risk of colon cancer, protect your heart health by regulating your blood pressure, help reduce PMS mood symptoms, and (of most interest) aid in fat lose and prevent fat gain. People who don't get enough calcium in their diet are more likely to be overweight. This is because when you don't get enough of this nutrient in your diet, your body produces more of a hormone called calcitriol which helps absorb more calcium; but it also causes your body to both store more fat and also prevent the breakdown of fat. Many studies have shown that higher calcium levels are associated with lower body fat levels- especially fat around the mid-section. Ideally one should get about 1,500 mg of calcium from their diet per day. Calcium rich foods include milk, yogurt, and broccoli. You may want to consider supplementing with 400-600 mg of calcium twice per day WITH food to improve absorption. You can also boost your calcium absorption by taking it with vitamin D.

Vitamin C- an indicator of your health

The benefits of vitamin C are numerous. Vitamin C levels in the blood seem to be a good indicator of overall health. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant and free radical scavenger. It supports healthy immune function and is important in the formation of collagen. It helps in the absorption of iron and the formation of red blood cells. It reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, strokes and cancer. It supports the integrity of capillaries. It lowers the level of bad cholesterol (LDL) and increases the level of good cholesterol (HDL). Vitamin C is important in wound healing and can help in the production of anti-stress hormones in addition to having anti-inflammatory effects. It also helps detoxify the body of heavy metals. People who smoke, drink, take birth control, suffer from depression and/ or are under a lot of stress should increase their intake of this important nutrient. Good sources of Vitamin C would be citrus fruits, tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage, green and red peppers. In addition to a heathy diet, supplementing with 500 mg two to three times a day is a great idea. If you bruise easily or you have bleeding gums, supplement with C and "see" what happens.

Manage Overeating

Most people overeat because they have not effectively dealt with the emotions which often drive overeating such as boredom, anger, guilt, sadness, loneliness, unresolved stress etc. For this reason, I recommend that individuals both learn ways to better manage their emotions and also not eat when in an emotional state if possible- better to calm down, center yourself and eat from place a peace. There are also some behavioral things one can do to help with overeating. First, I recommend that one eat very slowly and mindfully- savoring each bit of food and really experiencing the taste. There is a lag from the time your stomach is full to the time your brain gets the message that you are full. By eating slowly you give your brain time to receive that message. For this reason it is also a good idea to wait 5 minutes before you go for a second helping; often times after the 5 minute wait, you will decide you are not up for seconds after all. People who mindlessly eat in front of the TV often end up eating on average 500 calories more than if they ate with no such distraction. So shut the TV off when eating. Next, put less food on your plate; most of us are conditioned by our parents when we were growing up that we had to "clean out plates" to be excused, and if we didn't then somehow people in other countries would starve. So the more you put on your plate, the more you are likely to eat as a result of this now sub-consciously driven program. Drinking a lot of water during the day (a good practice anyway) often curbs appetite as many people confuse thirst with hunger. Besides, water helps give a sense of satiety. About 30-45 minutes before a meal you can take a fiber supplement or a make whey protein pudding (just add a bit of milk to a scoop of whey protein) to further help with satiety. Unlike most people who recommend you eat when you are hungry, I recommend the opposite approach. If you know that you get hungry for dinner at 6pm, try eating at 5:30. You will eat a lot less if you eat when you are not hungry vs when you are. Stick to a higher protein, modified carbohydrate diet to avoid insulin spikes and subsequent blood sugar fluctuations. Eating a high protein, lower carb diet keeps blood sugar levels stable. Always eat your protein before your carbs at a meal to lower insulin spikes and lower the overall glycemic index of the meal. Also, it takes one third of calories in protein just to metabolize it whereas almost all the calories from sugar based foods are immediately available for fat storage. Last, take in a good vitamin/ mineral supplement or a whole food based source of nutrients. Surprisingly, many people have at least one if not more nutrient deficiencies; as a result the brain sends the message to the body to eat more in an attempt to obtain for the deficient nutrient(s) from the diet.

Go Green! Green tea contains polyphenols which have potent anti-oxidant effects. I will list some of the benefits of drinking green tea. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells and reduce the risk of certain cancers. It thins the blood and decreases the chance of clotting which reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. It lowers total cholesterol and may improve the ratio of good (HDL) to bad (LDL) cholesterol. It also kills the bacteria that causes dental plaque. It can help those interested in weight loss as those who drink green tea burn more calories. It does contain some caffeine which can give an energy boost, but it also increases energy by decreasing the breakdown of nor-adrenaline in the body. Although it can stimulate you, it also contains an amino acid called L-threonine which can have a calming effect. Many people have reported automatic weight loss simply from switching from coffee to green tea.

Increase Growth Hormone Naturally

More and more people are spending hundreds to even thousands of dollars per month to take human growth hormone (hgh) in an attempt to turn back time on their biologic clocks. There are a number of things you can do to boost your growth hormone levels naturally. I will start with the amino acids known to help your pituitary gland kick out more of this precious anti-aging hormone. 1) Glutamine- 3-5 grams twice per day first thing in the morning and last thing before bed preferably on a empty stomach. This is the most abundant amino acid in your body. It also helps workout recovery so taking it after workouts can also be beneficial. It helps increase protein synthesis and decreases protein breakdown. It is important in promoting gastrointestinal health and improving immune function. 2) Arginine- it is also important in cardiovascular health. Arginine is a precursor to nitric oxide which mediates penile erection, so it can help with sexual performance. 3) Lysine- also important in growth and development and energy production. It can help decrease risk of osteoporosis. 4) Glycine- also has anti-inflammatory effects. 5) GABA- can also help improve mood, decrease anxiety and promote relaxation. 6) Leucine- helps muscle protein anabolism, increases strength, and spares muscle loss during voluntary weight loss (dieting).

One of the most important things that can help in dramatically increasing growth hormone production are intense weight training (check with your medical doctor before engaging in intense physical activity). Other things that may help with hgh production are systematic under-eating, limiting carbohydrate intake especially later in the day & before bedtime and insuring sound sleep. Growth hormone production spikes with deep sleep, so taking a power nap in the afternoon (if able) can give an extra hgh boost.

Boost your Testosterone

More and more doctors are becoming increasingly aware of "male andropause" in which men as they age experience a drop in their testosterone level which can lead to lower energy, irritability, depression, insomnia, decreased libido, a loss of muscle mass, increased body fat and concentration difficulties. This can be detected be a blood test that measures testosterone levels. If the level is low, the doctor may prescribe hormone replacement therapy. I would like to touch on ten suggestions to help boost testosterone levels naturally. The first three suggestions are all herbs 1) long jack (tongkat ali) 2) tribulus terrestris and 3) sarsparilla. Some other suggestions would be: 4) Supplement with zinc. The mineral zinc is very important in testosterone production, so making sure one is getting adequate zinc intake would be a great idea. 5) Add 25-50 mg of DHEA to your supplement regimen. DHEA which can be obtained at most pharmacies or health food stores can be converted in the body to testosterone. DHEA may also help with low grade depression, energy, libido and healthier body composition. 6) Pump iron. Intense anaerobic exercise like weight training can help the body increase both its testosterone and growth hormone output. 7) Use it or lose it. A person with a healthy sex life is much more apt to have a higher testosterone level. Regular ejaculation will also reduce the risk of certain prostate problems. 8) Reduce the ingestion of soy products. Soy contains phyto-estrogens which is something that men may want to avoid. Although the data is mixed, soy may also suppress thyroid function. 9) Reduce saturated fat intake and supplement with healthy fats (see previous blog post on fish oil). 10) Get adequate sleep.

Healthy Eating/ Weight Loss

Healthy eating does not need to be overly complicated; a bit of common sense goes along way. I would advise to avoid any fad diets or dietary extremes. A healthy eating plan should be easy to maintain over the long haul. At least 50% of your diet should be lean protein sources (i.e. fish, tuna, egg whites, turkey, chicken, lean beef). Eliminate or at least reduce sugar and high glycemic, fast acting carbohydrates such as breads and pastas made of white flour all of which cause a rapid rise in blood sugar. The rapid rise in blood sugar is followed by an excessive elevation of insulin which drives glucose (sugar) into adipose or fat cells. Better to choose low glycemic or slow acting carbs which help to keep blood sugar levels more steady after a meal. Good carbohydrate sources would include oatmeal, most fruits and vegetables (which are a great source of nutrients and phyto-nutrients), brown rice and whole wheat bread in moderation. Choose sweet potatoes or yams over regular potatoes if given a choice. Add in some healthy fats such as olive oil, nuts or nut butter, avocados, seeds and fish oil, and you have a great foundational diet. To keep blood sugar levels steady and avoid an elevation of fat storing hormones, eat every 3 hours if possible. For most this would include 3 meals with 3 snacks which could consist of plain yogurt, nuts or a low carbohydrate protein shake (whey protein is the great). To cover your bases, it would be a good investment to add in a good quality multivitamin or whole food source of nutrients like Juice Plus. Keep very well hydrated and keep caffeine to minimum- green tea is much better choice over coffee. Keep stress levels to a minimum, avoid emotional overeating and ensure you are getting enough good quality sleep. Lastly, add in some aerobics and resistance training and you are well on your way to looking and feeling better.

Wow! More and more evidence keeps coming in to support the numerous health benefits of fish oil- which contain omega 3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA. Most people don't eat enough sea food, so supplementing with fish oil is a great idea and a good way to enhance your health. Although I am sure I will miss something, here is a list of the known benefits of fish oil: reduced risk of heart disease, improved cholesterol profile, weight loss, immune system enhancement, anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic effects, improved blood circulation, improved workout recovery, improved prostate health for men and help with PMS for women. On the mental health front, the brain is made of 60% fat (mostly omega 3 and 6 fatty acids) much of which surrounds and protects the brain nerves (neurons). Studies have shown that fish oil can help alleviate symptoms of ADHD, depression, bipolar depression and post-partum depression. I take about 3 grams of fish oil throughout the day in addition to trying to include more fish and tuna to my diet.
